AIDS Hike for Life

final total
Picture perfect weather helped Mohawk Valley residents raise $36,275 in the 13th Annual AIDS Hike for Life, presented by Empower Federal Credit Union, at Hamilton College in Clinton on Sunday, May 1, to support AIDS Community Resources (ACR) in its battle to prevent the spread of HIV and STDs.  The total was an increase of more than $2,000 from last year.

This year, 2011, marks the 30th anniversary of the recognition by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of AIDS as the mysterious disease that was causing the death of young, gay, men.  In the years since, AIDS has been found around the globe, in all races and ages, and women are as likely as men to become infected.  “We have made a lot of progress preventing the spread of AIDS through public education about condom use,” said ACR Executive Director Michael Crinnin.  “In recent years, though, HIV infections are up again, among young people in particular.”  100% of the money donated to the AIDS Hike for Life supports emergency client services and HIV/AIDS Youth Prevention programs like the Teen AIDS Task Force (TATF) and the Youth Safety Project for LGBTQ youth in the Mohawk Valley.

Youth prevention programs are increasingly crucial in light of updated statistics for Oneida and Herkimer Counties from New York State Department of Health, which show that youth and young adults in Oneida and Herkimer counties, ages 15-24, represent a higher percentage of new STD infections than the national estimate of 50%.   76% of chlamydia cases and 67% of gonorrhea cases reported in 2009 were in young people.   In 2008, there were 865 individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Oneida and Herkimer Counties (NYSDOH, 2010).

AIDS Community Resources wants to thank our AIDS Hike for Life sponsors for their invaluable assistance:  Empower Federal Credit Union, GLAM at MetLife, The Hartford, Syracuse Orthopedic Specialist, McDonald’s, Oneida Savings Bank, Bon Appétit Management Co., Chobani, Outback Steakhouse, Saranac, Starbucks Coffee, and our media sponsors KISS FM 97.9 & 105.5 and WUTR.
