Housing Opportunities
AIDS Community Resources provides assistance to HIV+ individuals in need of housing through New York State housing assistance programs in the Central, Northern and Mohawk Valley regions of New York.
HOPWA, Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS, has had a tremendous positive impact on persons living with HIV/AIDS throughout our nine county service area. The lack of stable housing often interrupts the HIV+ person’s ability to adhere to complicated medication, nutrition, and treatment regimens. Lack of stable housing has many negative consequences where children are part of the household. HOPWA provides both long-term and short-term assistance. Case Managers verify eligibility and help with applications. The HOPWA coordinator conducts annual site inspections and assists clients with re-certifying.
Clients must report all changes in marital status, household composition, employment, and income as they occur. Each adult in the household is expected to contribute a share toward rent and utilities. Clients are expected to pursue skill building, job-training, and employment opportunities.
In 2007, AIDS Community Resources provided long-term assistance to 128 individuals and their families.
AIDS Community Resources regularly receives lists of available apartments and will make them available to help clients in the search for housing, even if those clients do not qualify for housing subsidies.
