AIDS Walk Run raises $186,598
Powerhouse anniversary draws crowd for annual AIDS Walk/Run
An important anniversary and the promise of good weather drew record crowds to Beaver Lake Nature Center Sunday for the 19th Annual AIDS Walk/Run, presented by Empower Federal Credit Union and UPS. June 5 signified 30 years since publication of the first medical article about the disease eventually known as AIDS. Singer-songwriter Todd Hobin composed and performed an original song to break the moment of silence to remember those hurt by AIDS.
More than 60 million people worldwide have been infected by HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Twenty-five million have died. AIDS has no cure. “The people being infected in Central New York today weren’t alive when AIDS was ‘discovered’,” said AIDS Community Resources Executive Director Michael Crinnin, commenting on the area’s recent spike in HIV infections among young people younger than 25. “My goal is to keep the AIDS dialogue going; to keep parents talking; to keep church leaders talking; to keep elected officials talking about staying safe from AIDS.”
The AIDS Walk/Run is AIDS Community Resources’ largest outreach and fundraising event in Central New York. 100% of the money raised stays in Central New York to benefit ACR’s youth HIV prevention programs and client support services.
